South Australian harness racing trainer Glenda Fuller has always maintained the training of star filly Whats Emma Got is a team effort…well, now it will have to be.
Fuller broke her right shoulder in an accident at home last week and as such has her arm in a sling for at least eight weeks.
So on Friday night when Whats Emma Got raced at Globe Derby Park, it was left to Fuller’s husband Neville and daughter Sharon Newman to have the filly ready to race.
Fuller, despite the pain, wasn’t going to miss seeing her stable flasgship, so she was driven up to the track and parked on the hill next to the grandstand.
Whats Emma Got, driven by regular reinswoman Danielle Hill, did her part, leading throughout in the Clay and Mineral Sales Pace.
A red hot $1.10 favourite, Whats Emma Got scored by six metres from East To West, with Storm Chief a metre away third.
“It is so frustrating,” Fuller said. “I can’t do anything for myself. I’m right handed and have real trouble using my left hand, it is not natural.
“When I fell, I wasn’t really aware I had done so much damage. I actually kept going and prepared the night feeds, but when I went into the house Neville said I am going to take you to hospital.
“Then it was discovered I had broken my shoulder and would need it in a sling for at last six weeks.
“Sharon and Neville do a lot of work with the horses, but now they will have to do it all. I will only be able to watch, and maybe do something with my left hand.
“Sharon really does most of the work with Emma, as the breeder and owner, she really loves the filly.”
Fuller said she was delighted with Whats Emma Got’s latest triumph, which took her record to 18 wins and four placings from 22 starts.
“The runner up really kept alongside early to ensure it was not a walk in the park, but Emma responded in grand style over the final stages,” Fuller declared.
“It was only her second run this time in and should ensure she is further improved.”
The immediate target for the dashing daughter of Grinfromeartoear is the SA BOTRA Three-year-old Fillies heats and Final at Globe Derby Park.
Heats are scheduled to be run this week, with the Final on May 29. The Southern Cross series later in the season is also in the sights.
