Upset in Island Breeders Stakes Final

CHARLOTTETOWN, PE – Elm Grove Inarush played the role of giant slayer Saturday afternoon at Red Shores Racetrack and Casino at the Charlottetown Driving Park.
 

Mark Bradley drove the filly to the 1:57 upset victory in the $12,500 two-year-old pacing filly Island Breeders final over Saulsbrook Alana, who saw her win streak snapped at eight. Saulsbrook Alana (Marc Campbell) was second with Sail Through (Gilles Barrieau) third. Elm Grove Inarush did all the road work with fractions of 28, 57.1 and 1:26.2 with Saulsbrook Alana advancing first over but unable to get closer than three-quarters of a length to the lead. Elm Grove Inaruch is co-owned and trained by Eddy Doucette with co-owner Grant Mann, Gordon MacLeod and Blaine Thibeau, all of Kensington.

The three-year-old pacing finals were both captured by Charlottetown’s leading driver, Marc Campbell. Campbell guided Forever Paradise to victory in the $12,500 three-year-old colt pacing Island Breeders final 1:56.1 for trainer Kevin MacLean and Island owners Reg MacPherson, and David and Aaron MacKenzie. The Rev (Danny Romo) was second with Jacobs Jackpot (Barrieau) third. Western Judy won the three-year-old pacing filly final in a hard fought off-the-pace stretch drive in 1:58.2 for trainer-driver Campbell and owner Blair Hansen of Charlottetown. Second went to Dianna Santanna (John Holmes) and Top Brand (Romo).

The two-year-old pacing colt final saw Settlement Request (Barrieau) victorious in 1:59.2 over Dumas Walker (Myles Heffernan) and JJ Laser (Campbell). Settlement Request is owned by Alfred Barrieau and Michael Clinton of New Brunswick.

The $7,500 three-year-old Island Breeders trot final was won by Oceanview Kate (Mike Stevenson) in 2:04.1 over Rash Statement (Brodie MacPhee) and Ashotinthedark (Corey MacPherson). Oceanview Kate is owned and trained by William Roloson of Belfast.

Saulsbrook Pippa (MacPherson) won the two-year-old trot final in 2:08.1 with Glencove Yoshi (Stevenson) second and Ice Pop (Brian Andrew) third. Saulsbrook Pippa is co-owned and trained by John Pineau of Hunter River and Myron Ford of Harrington.

Campbell had three wins on the card, while Barrieau and Holmes each had driving doubles. Total bet on the 14-dash card was $35,792.

Blu Meadow Willie wins final SRW feature

SUMMERSIDE, PE – Blue Meadow Willie was the final part of a Brodie MacPhee driving hat-trick winning the final card of the 2013 season Sunday afternoon at Red Shores at The Summerside Raceway.

Blue Meadow Willie captured the $2,000 feature event in 1:58.4 with MacPhee in the bike for trainer and co-owner Robert MacInnis and co-owner Brenda MacInnis of Summerside. Blue Star Outlaw (Kenny Arsenault) laid down the early fractions of 28.2, 58.2, and 1:29.2 before being collared by stable mate Leading Camdidate (Jason Hughes) past three-quarters. Blue Meadow Willie then rallied from mid-pack to collar the leader by three-quarters of a length. Scootin For Joy (Stevenson) was second with Doll R General (Mark McKinnon) third.

The $1,800 Open trot saw Zip The Lip victorious for driver Brian MacPhee, co-owner and trainer Donald Sweet and co-owner Orville Willis of O’Leary. Zip The Lip did all the road work to stop the clock in 2:00.1, with Caliban Hanover (Ron Gass) second and Abundaspin (Harold Shepherd) third.

The $1,550 back-up pace was won by Le Fugueur (Marc Campbell) in 1:58.1 for trainer Darren Trainor and owner Jennifer Trainor of Vernon River. The win cemented Campbell as the top driver of the 2013 Summerside meet with 42 victories, and Trainor as the top trainer with 15 wins on the season.

Campbell, Arsenault and Brian MacPhee all scored driving doubles on the card. Total bet for the 14-dash card was $19,969.
