CHARLOTTETOWN, PE – Balanchine brought himself to one shy of 50 lifetime wins in the Saturday night preferred pace at Red Shores Racetrack and Casino at The Charlottetown Driving Park.
Driven by Brodie MacPhee, the nine-year-old gelding used a first over move to secure the lead and never looked back en route to a five length 1:55.4 victory in the $2,300 preferred pace, giving him lifetime win number 49. Inspired Art (driven by Corey MacPherson) was second while I D K (Vincent Poulton) rounded out the $630.70 triactor. Balanchine is owned by Mike Pollard of Stratford and Joey Gallant of Charlottetown and trained by Jackie Matheson.
It was one of four wins on the night for driver MacPhee as he also scored with Something Blue (1:58.2), J V S Ring (1:56.1) and Machinthesand (1:56.2), while it was part of Matheson’s trio of training wins.
The $2,200 Fillies and Mares Open saw an upset win by Ovation Killean and trainer-driver Vaughan Doyle in 1:58.1. Second went to JK Special (Walter Cheverie) with third place to Private Joke (Gary Chappell). Doyle used front end tactics to secure the win and give him lifetime driving win 997, after he won with Pictonian Walton (1:58.4) earlier on the card, bringing him closer to the elusive 1,000 win plateau. Ovation Killean, who paid $26.10 to win, is owned by Darla Jay of Charlottetown.
John Holmes also had a driving double on the 12-dash card with a total bet of $30,354.
