The International Group I Championnat Europeen Des 5 Ans (European Championship for 5 years old) has assembled a star-studded Pan-European field at Vincennes.
Three of the four Scandinavian Trav-Derby champions from the previous year are entered plus the runner up to the French equivalent, the Criterium des 4 Ans Un Mec d’Heripre.
Fabrice Solouy’s Orlando Vici stallion finished fifth in both French 5YO Classics recently, including his first time under saddle a fortnight ago. This field is certainly no harder, and Un Mec d’Heripre will again be one of the favourites since he had won twice before the Group I classics.
Finland’s Trav-Derby winner Brad de Veluwe also went on to win the Prix de l’UET, the four-year-old equivalent to this race which is also being held again on the same day, this time in Solvalla.
Brad de Veluwe is likely to be one of the favourites, his last start being in the 500,000 Masters Series final at the same venue at the beginning of the month. He has been racing in the top company and has been there and thereabouts in fields much harder than this.
Swedish 2012 Trav-Derby champ Pato has actually moved to France recently where he is trained by Anders Lindquist. He was disqualified in his first start in the country, when he raced in the Grand Prix la Voix du Nord last week, the race in which Sanity beat Ready Cash. He did win three starts back in Sweden.
And Norway’s TravDerby champion of last year Juliano Rags is also in the field for trainer/driver Noralf P. Braekken. He galloped last start but has had a win and two thirds in four starts since June in Norway.
And the Norwegian Hoppe Derby (Oaks) winner My Happiness E.P., a Credit Winner mare, is also entered for Denmark trainer Bo Westergaard who competes in both Denmark and Norway. The mare is in top form with two victories in her last two starts – one in each country.
Italian stallion Olmo Holz, who won the Italian Derby consolation when raced in Italy for Paolo Romanelli, has been the French stable of ex-pat Belgian Vincent Martens for the past year and won his last start at Vincennes only last month, his second at this track this year. He will be driven by Martens’ brother Christopher.
Uhlan du Val was second in the Criterium des 5 Ans, his fourth second placing in five starts in top French age group races, and will also be at short odds for trainer/driver Cedric Megissier and is the best of the rest of the French contingent making up the field.
It includes Richard Westerink‘s Umoko, the full brother to current star Timoko but he has struggled to reach the heights of his illustrious brother in top company while the Netherlands is represented by Best Well for Hans Bot.
