Charlottetown, PE – Carnivore and harness racing driver Walter Cheverie made every move count to win the top class in a dramatic four horse finish Saturday night at Red Shores Racetrack & Casino at the Charlottetown Driving Park.
Cheverie mapped out the trip by getting away third from post 6 but ran into some traffic problems after being shuffled and locked in along the pylons fifth on route to the three-quarter pole. The duo remained patient finding a seam to get into the outside flow as the field headed for the final turn. Then, instead of tipping outside, Cheverie waited until My Lucky Killean (Gary Chappell) faded enough for him to take the Maryn Webster trainee back to the inside and blast up the passing lane to out gun pace-setter Cabo Pan Lucas (Danny MacDonald), Tempo Seelster (Vince Poulton) and a fast closing All Turain (Corey MacPherson) in the lane.
The 1:57.2 victory was Carnivore's (Real Desire) third score from four starts in the spring meet for Valleygrove Farms of Kensington. All Turain was second with Cabo Pan Lucas, who laid down fractions of 27.2, 57.3 and 1:27.2, remaining strong for third. The 6-5-2 triactor paid $41.90.
Camcun, owned by Jeff Holmes, Orwell and Trevor MacDonald, Vernon Bridge, won the finale giving Cheverie the late double.
Pleasure Girls ran away with the trot division leveling the competition by 17 lengths for driver-trainer Ron Gass and owner Shelly Gass, Cornwall.
