SUMMERSIDE – Ys Lotus and Midnight Play won the harness racing Governor’s Plate eliminations on Sunday afternoon.
Ys Lotus, a five-year-old brown gelding by If I Can Dream-Bolero Takara-Life Sign edged out two-time defending Governor’s Plate champion D Gs Camme in a photo finish in the first of two $5,000 eliminations at Red Shores at Summerside Raceway.
Time of the mile by the Marc Campbell-driven Ys Lotus was 1:53.4, which was close to the 1:53 track record that is co-held by D Gs Camme and Big Surf.
Also qualified
The Kenny Arsenault-driven Jeb finished in the show position and Junebugs Baby, with Myles Heffernan in the bike, also qualified for Saturday night’s $22,000 Governor’s Plate, presented by Summerside Chrysler Dodge.
The top four finishers in each elimination advanced.
Second elimination
Midnight Play, a four-year-old charcoal gelding by Shadow Play-Midnight Art-Artsplace, pulled off an upset in the second elimination.
Corey MacPherson drove Midnight Play to a 1:56 mile. OK Galahad and driver Jason Hughes placed, Big Surf and Campbell were third and Mark Bradley and Warrawee Phoenix also qualified with a fourth-place showing.
