Harness racing trotter Great Things Happen led all the way to win yesterdays Ashburton Trotters Flying Mile for trainer Gavin Smith.
Smith had the speedy Love You gelding blasting off the mobile from barrier seven and the 6yo gelding was in front after 400m. He kept up a strong pace and always had the field covered, coasting to an easy win in quick time of 1-55.4.
Habibti Ivy finished quickly from the rear of the field in the straight for second and the Greg and Nina Hope trained Everybody Knows ran on well for third.
The time for the mobile mile was the second fastest in the history of the race, with only Monbet last year going a fraction faster in 1-55.2.
By winning yesterday Great Things Happen has cemented his tag as favourite for the (Gr 1) $300,000 Dominion Handicap at Addington in November. The TAB bookmakers have shortened him in to $3.60 on the FF win futures market, with Bordeax a $4.20 second favourite.
Habibti Ivy has also firmed in to $5.00 in the Dominion after her slashing late run for second in yesterdays race.
