Leading harness racing driver Greg Sugars gave a masterclass drive last night in the $100,000 South Australian Cup, controlling the race from start to finish from the death seat in a manner of a driver at the top of his game.
Star Chamber and Nathan Ford made a flyer from barrier one to lead early while Greg Sugars worked Inter-Dominion Final place getter Flaming Flutter across to the death seat from barrier four and immediately applied no pressure to the leader so the tempo in the early stages was moderate to say the least.
Some Kinda Tactics had a look early for the death seat but Sugars was having none of it and held his position with Flaming Flutter.
Next to make a bid was Barimah and Damien Wilson but Greg Sugars gave him the same answer he had given Some Kinda Tactics which resulted in Barimah having to be restrained all the way back to last to get in to the running line.
With a lap to go Major Crocker and Nathan Ford slid up three wide outside Flaming Flutter but that was as close as he got as well as Sugars dominated the Cup tempo.
When Greg said go off the final top bend, Flaming Flutter quickly stole a break on the field and although run at late by Hotasel and John Justice, had enough in reserve for a deserved victory while Crusader Acey and Anthony Butt got home good along the inner for third at big odds.
It was a masterful display by Greg Sugars in that he did enough to keep the attackers at bay while still having enough in reserve to go on and win the race.
