The Inaugural Leigh Plunkett Foundation Charity Auction and Fundraising Dinner will be held at Penrith Paceway on Thursday October 3 and all participants and fans are encouraged to add their support.

Plunkett was a trainer/driver/studmaster and administrator who passed away from Leukaemia in 2007. The idea for a foundation in his name was born from his close friend, Alabar Bloodstock General Manager John Coffey, and has been inaugurated in conjunction with Harness Racing Australia and with the support of all State Controlling Bodies.

The Leigh Plunkett Foundation will become Harness Racing's very own charity.

Aside from an annual distribution of funds to charities and/or to an individual in Harness Racing that is experiencing severe hardship after a major accident or natural disaster, the Foundation will also establish a scholarship that will provide the opportunity for a young person to travel the northern hemisphere and New Zealand and gain an education in the world of harness racing. In honour of Leigh, The Leukaemia Foundation has been chosen as this year's charity to benefit from fund raising efforts.

All Harness Racing Clubs across the country who race during the last two weeks of August have been asked to sell race names to honour friends or relatives that have either passed away from or survived a serious illness, and donate a portion of their sponsorship to the Foundation.

To help raise awareness of the Foundation, drivers in each Australian State will carry the colours of the Leigh Plunkett Foundation for their drives throughout October. Lauren Panella has been selected as the NSW reinsperson and HRNSW will donate $200 to the Foundation for each of Lauren's wins during the month.

In addition, each state will conduct a charity function at a major race club.

In NSW, the Inaugural Leigh Plunkett Foundation Charity Auction and Fundraising Dinner will be conducted at The SKY Lounge, Penrith Paceway, from 6.00pm on Thursday 3rd October.

Tickets for the event are $100 per head or $950 for a table of ten (GST inc.)and include the race night buffet, beer, wine and soft drinks throughout the evening. Miracle Mal Johnston will be guest speaker on the night which will be run in conjunction with an eight race programme.

Race night sponsorship packages are also available that include hospitality for the selected number of guests, naming rights for one race on the night, a ride in the mobile starting barrier and an advertisement in the racebook. Package costs are $650 for 2 guests, $790 for 4 guests and $1,200 for ten guests (GST inc.)

For tickets and sponsorship packages or to make a donation (tax deductable) please call Kate Dumesny or Joel Fowler on (02) 9722 6600
