Gigg was a popular figure not only in harness racing but all walks of life.
A former Penrith first grade rugby league footballer, Gigg ventured into sports administration at the conclusion of his rugby league career, firstly with the Penrith Panthers then to Western Australia before starting his long tenure with the Newcastle HRC in 1992. He was a former Chairman of the Harness Racing Clubs Committee and more recently was involved with the Hunter Academy of Sport in the development of junior drivers.
"We are deeply shocked and saddened by this news," said Harness Racing NSW CEO Sam Nati.
"Ross was the heart and soul of the Newcastle Harness Racing Club.
"On behalf of the HRNSW Board we extend our condolences to his family, friends and the club that he dearly loved."
Ross passed away suddenly at his home overnight. Further information including funeral arrangements will be provided in the coming days.
