HRNSW CEO Sam Nati has announced a new direction for harness racing in Tamworth.

Harness Racing NSW (HRNSW) yesterday exchanged contracts on a property in Tamworth at the corner of the New England Highway and Burgmanns Lane for the purpose of developing a new harness racing facility.

The purchase of the land represents a fresh direction for the sport in Tamworth as explained by HRNSW CEO Sam Nati.

"We had previously considered building a racing precinct adjacent to the thoroughbred track and on more than one occasion revisited the idea of buying the existing venue at the Tamworth Showground, but neither of those options satisfied our longer term cost-benefit position", he said.

"This land, however, not only offers great potential as the new home of harness racing in Tamworth, but brings with it exciting commercial opportunities as well."

The announcement comes after many years of consultation between Harness Racing NSW, the Tamworth Regional Council and the Tamworth Harness Racing Club (THRC).

According to the Acting Chairman of the THRC Mark Lowe the land selection process was rigorous and time consuming, but one that will ultimately reap rewards.

"The acquisition of this property and the subsequent development of a new track, the associated facilities and potentially a training centre ensures the future of harness racing in Northern NSW and hopefully a resurgence within the industry across the entire region which also includes Armidale, Inverell and Narrabri", he said

"It will give the current participants renewed hope and interest and a platform to foster and develop the great potential that our sport has to offer and with the help of our members, supporters and sponsors we are determined to see this project succeed at all levels."
