A strong card of eight races including the Banjo Patterson Cup and a performance by Australian country singer Adam Brand headline Sunday's Carnival Of Cups meeting at the Orange Paceway. Wagga Wagga trainer Bernie Kelly has selected the feature as the comeback race for his talented pacer Macca Kelly but has tempered his expectations after drawing barrier five.
"Macca Kelly is having his first start since the regional final of the Breeders Challenge last season in July. He has had plenty of work and a trial, but the wide draw is a bit of a concern," Kelly said.
"He won his only trial, I'm very happy with him and how he performs on the weekend will probably decide in which direction I go with him moving forward, I'm weighing up the option of sending him to Queensland for a little while but I haven't really thought that all through at the moment."
Macca Kelly has won more than $160,000 in his career and spent time in Victoria with talented trainer.
"I sent him down to Emma for a while and she did a good job with him but he hasn't gone to the heights that I had thought he may have as a young horse, he's not a big horse, he's a real nugget and is still a bit big in condition."
"I nominated his full brother Bernies Idol in the two year old race on Sunday as well but I'm going to take him out and wait for another day, he is eligible for the Australian Pacing Gold and I think he is a nice horse."
Miss Paula is the mother of Macca Kelly and Bernies Idol and at the age of 24 is still producing.
"I have been using the embryo transfer with Miss Paula and it is great to be able to prolong her breeding career with it, she might be 24 years old but she only looks about 14 and when you have a broodmare gem like her you want her to be able to keep producing for as long as she can."
The Banjo Patterson Cup is race seven at Orange on Sunday and will start 5:43pm with country music star Adam Brand performing LIVE during the course of the day.
Just by being on course one lucky patron will go into the draw to win a brand new Toyota Yaris.
