The first TAB Carnival Of Cups meeting for the season will be run at Eugowra next Monday with the Canola Cup attracting the strongest field in the 15 year history of the race. The $20,000 C0 event has attracted horses from all parts of New South Wales and Victorian trainer Steve Duffy is hoping to upset the locals with his talented four year old pacer Almost El Eagle.

"I took Almost El Eagle to Wagga late last season before the Breeders Crown and I was having a chat to David Druitt and he told me that if things worked out and the horse was still a C0 that the Canola Cup is a race that I should target," Duffy said.

"After the Breeders Crown I was able to give him a week off and then I trained him out of a paddock for another week so it really freshened him up. He has come up pretty quickly and the run in the heats would have topped him off nicely for the final."

Talented reinsman Blake Jones will retain the drive in the final after Sunday's heat victory.

"Blake will drive him again, he did a good job and he said that the horse did it pretty comfortably in the heat, he has driven him twice for two wins, hopefully he can make it three from three."

"I drove him a couple of times early on in his career but that was when he was a bit fizzy and could get fierce in the run but he is a more relaxed horse and much more tractable."

Almost El Eagle is part owned by a group of people from the Shepparton East Football Club.

"My two youngest sons used to play in the under 14's and under 17's for the club, they have since moved on but that's how I met the group."

"There will probably be four of us cheering him on next Monday, the trip to Eugowra takes about five hours and forty minutes from my place and I did the trip up and back in the one day on Sunday and I will be doing the same for the final, the horse is a very good traveller and it doesn't knock him around."
