As the state's leading trainer Steve Turnbull is enjoying a remarkable season and after falling agonisingly short last year when shooting for a milestone of 200 winners and finishing on 199, he is hoping to make amends this time around. Fresh from training the quinella in the J.D Watts Memorial at Fairfield on Monday, Turnbull is realistic about his chances of achieving the remarkable feat.

"I've been told that I need to average four or five winners per week for the rest of the season and I might just scrape in. That isn't an easy task but I will be trying my best," Turnbull said.

"It was nice to win the JD Watts at Fairfield and it was something different from normal because I beat Amanda home in a close finish but in saying that I wasn't game enough to say anything when I went past her!"

Turnbull is training a team of 40 horses and that makes for plenty of work at home.

"As a stable we are just doing our best. There is always a lot of things to do and it makes for long days but when you are getting the results it makes it all the worthwhile."

Mighty Gift won a three year old event at Tabcorp Park Menangle on Saturday night but Turnbull confirmed he will not be starting in the Breeders Challenge.

"No he isn't eligible this year, when the sustaining payment was due his owner was in having a serious operation and he thought that it would be direct debited from his account but it wasn't. We appealed the decision but we lost and he is not allowed in."

"We won't take him to Queensland for the derby, I would be more inclined to consider a Breeders Crown campaign but we normally dodge that series because it is so strong. We will just have to see how he goes over the next month or so."

Turnbull admitted Mighty Gift was 'a bit' underdone on Saturday and is expecting improvement going forward.
