Cream Ridge, NJ – 12/10/2020 – The Standardbred Retirement Foundation, (SRF) is pleading for help for 61 Standardbreds tagged and on the manifest to ship for slaughter.
The vast majority of these horses were the reason harness racing was rich not long ago. Now they stand in desperation in need of homes and donations to get them off the slaughter-line. SRF is asking for help for them; there are no provisions made by the racing industry for the horses when no longer profitable. They now stand in crammed pens. One mare produced 13 foals, a few had earnings of $250,000. to $400,000., but none have any of this hard earned money to help them now.
Home offers and donations are critically needed. A few have donations by past owners to help release them from the horrific trip to slaughter, but every horse needs a home. SRF asks for homes; foster homes; donations; assistance to reach out to past owners and breeders for help; and help from reputable organizations with a protective mission that aligns with SRF. The list of horses can be accessed on the website, see below. Tuesday, Dec.15, 2020 is the expected deadline, confirmation has not been received yet. Most of these horses are in Shippensburg, Pa., are few are being held in other pens. There is information below and on SRF's website at the link below. More photos are coming.
SRF is not financially able to take in horses at this time with more than 400 under their expense and care, and there is no space available at any of the facilities it uses. It is seeking help for them by screening home offers, foster offers, managing donations, and making arrangements for those that can become safe.
Many of these horses are very hungry, emaciated. Some have old racing injuries, and others are suffering from overuse on the roads, plowing and logging. With some food and good care and a chance to rehabilitate, each one can have a comfortable life being a horse for pasture or pleasure use.
SRF has its 12 Days of Giving list ready, its annual holiday fundraiser, however, with this situation being so critical, it asks donors to kindly help these horses instead.
