TROIS-RIVIERES, October 14, 2013 – The revival of horse racing of Standardbreds in Quebec has again reached another milestone . At its meeting of October 11th, the Board of Directors of the Quebec Jockey Club has approved an increase of more than 50% for purses in the 2014 racing season at the Hippodrome 3R .
The increase of pari-mutual wagering recorded by QJC at the track, as well as on the internet through the website Horseplayer Interactive (HPI) and in the 8 OTB's in 2013 allows the industry to be more optimistic and move forward strongly. Assuming the continuation of this betting trend over the coming months, QJC announced that the total purses for 2014 will reach $3 million.
At the end of October, the “Comité de Liaison”, comprised of representatives from Quebec Jockey Club and the Horsemen's Association, ATAQ , will define some key elements for the next racing season that will be announced at the end of the month . It is important to mention that the minimum purse level for “overnights” will be raised to around $ 3,000 , purses level for “Quebec series” will also be increased, at least 4 specials races per week will be scheduled with purses of $ 6,000 and $ 8,000 , not to mention purses of around $ 4,000 for the " maidens " classes.
In the meantime , Quebec Jockey Club will continue its efforts to persuade the government of the importance of the racing industry in terms of job creation in the regions and its major economic impacts. The QJC business plan for the creation of over 5,000 jobs and benefits of more than $ 150 million in five years fits very well in the new Government of Quebec’s economic plan whose main priority is to create jobs.
