The nomination of Amazing Dream for the NZ Free for All on Friday week sets up a possible situation where harness history will be made-again.
There is water to flow under the bridge before a decision is made but safely through the Nevele R Final and bouncing around in her usual rambunctious fashion, Natalie and Mark may well set their sights on the FFA before heading north for the mare features over the summer.
That reflects what a tough customer she is and what has set her apart from her contemporaries already with her Woodlands Derby win at Auckland in March.
All Stars has already won the Free for All with a four year old when Ultimate Machete won three years ago with Natalie in the cart-the first four year old to win in over 50 years but a four year old mare has yet to win in the 106 year history of the famous race- and few have tried
But then not many mares of any age have been successful, the most recent Blossom Lady as an aged mare in 1992- and all of them champions.
Armalight and Bonnie’s Chance completed Cup-Free for All doubles in the 1980’s but since 1940 the only other female winners have been Haughty {1946) Robin Dundee (1965) and Stella Frost (1970)
Only one other femaie Trix Pointer (1922) has won the race and that was three years after she had won the Cup for Free Holmes.
But when Amazing Dream won the Woodlands she was the first filly to do so in more than 40 years so records are nothing to this grand mare.
