Horse men and horse women at Scarborough Downs showed their support of October's Breast Cancer Awareness month by decorating horses in pink for the harness racing meeting on Sunday. Mares and geldings alike got the pink symbol on their shoulders before they suited up.
“Four people I know have been diagnosed with breast cancer,” said Katy Waterhouse, where in the paddock she stenciled a pink ribbon on Light Iron, who races in the 5th. “It touches everyone. It’s important that we show our support.”
Stephanie and Adam Gray gave their mare, Pan Taylor, a pink shadow roll to wear this month. And driver Michael DeRuntz painted his racing sulky pink to show his support.
As the races commenced on Sunday, pink dominated: DeRuntz had a win in Race 2 with Nothing’s Ever Free with Pan Taylor right behind, for an important health awareness exacta.
