Tim Butt - A master with Trotting horses

The Tim Butt trained Hostile Grins showed today (Saturday) exactly why the C3 grade was only a temporary stop-over when he won the Wairio Cup at harness racing's Central Southland Raceway.

Trainer Tim Butt had the son of Go For Grins looking in superb condition for today's $18,000 feature, and even after a tardy beginning still proved far too good for the opposition. Driver Anthony Butt had Hostile Grins handy turning for home, stretching out to score by 1 1/2 lengths at the line. Artbeat was second a neck ahead of Move Over.

The time was sharp, Hostile Grins recording 2.59.7 for the 2400m stand, home in 57.4 and 28.3. The five year old has now won five races from only 12 starts and took his earnings past $40,000. Meanwhile the John Hay trained Pay Me Cullen scored a freebie in the hands of Bob Butt when the pair took out the junior drivers event in emphatic fashion. The son of Christian Cullen was given a beautiful 1-1 sit by young Butt before landing in the chair with 1200 to run. Butt hardly moved in the straight as Pay Me Cullen came away to win by 1 1/4 lengths at the line, a slick mile-rate of 1.58.7 suggesting Pay Me Cullen isn't done with yet.

"He won that easily today, he seems a pretty nice horse and John does a great job and always has them ready," said Bob Butt. "It wasn't the warmest of days down there so to go 2.57 (2400 mobile) was a super run, and he jogged it." It was win number three from eight starts for the speedy son of Christian Cullen.

The Highlights:

Top Sire: 8 sires from 8 races.
