North Wagga (NSW) couple Denis and Jo Howe, the breeders for former glamour racemare Distant Memory, is offering a three-strong consignment at the Australian Pacing Gold Sydney sale at Warwick Farm on Sunday (March 7).
The trio – all grand looking colts – with two by the boom American import Sweet Lou and one by Captaintreacherous, Australia’s leading first crop sire in 2020.
The first of the Mataranka Park Standardbreds’ draft is Lot 619, a Sweet Lou colt out of the Sportswriter mare Big Bang Molly, whose first foal, Smaltese, is the favourite for the Group 2 $50,000 Sapling Stakes at Menangle.
Big Bang Molly, who was only lightly raced, ranks as a half-sister to the NSW Breeders Challenge and Breeders Crown heat winner Brick Top 1:53.4 ($109,027), their dam, Machinegun Molly 1:58.2 ($101,375), being a heat winner of the Victoria Oaks, Vicbred and APG.
Lot 652, a bay Captaintreacherous colt, is from a Rocknroll Hanover sister to the American classics winner and successful sire Foreclosure (1:48.8), the winner of 15 races and $807,746 in stakes. The colt’s grand-dam, Pleasing Package, took a record of 1:50.4, won 38 races and $359,380 and was one of the best daughters of Fake Left.
Completing the Mataranka Park draft is Lot 726, a colt by Sweet Lou out of the NZ 4YO Championship winner and Harness Jewels placegetter The Crystal Star 1:49.8 ($148,406). The colt is a half-brother to three sub 1:59 performers including the 2019 APG Brisbane APG Championship winner My Ultimate Star (1:53.8) and a member of the same family as the Bendigo Cup and Inter Dominion heat winner Anvil’s Star, the WA Derby winner Patronus Star and last year’s crack WA juvenile Lavra Joe.
