Rest in peace Hugh! - Mr Green's Catholic Requiem Mass willl be held on Thursday.

The father of prominent harness racing trainer - John Green - and a recipient of the Queen's Service Medal just this year, passed away in Auckland last Friday. Hugh Green was 80. On New Year's Eve, Mr Green was awarded a Queen's Service Medal for services to philanthropy. The Mt Albert resident was the creator of the Hugh Green Group, a multi-million dollar set of companies with interests in everything from land to farming, gas and oil exploration. He is also the man behind the Hugh Green Foundation, worth $50 million, which donates all of its proceeds each year to mainly medical charities.

Born in Ireland's County Donegal, a fairly depressed area at the time, Mr Green left school aged 12 to work as a cattle drover.

After working in Scotland, England and Tasmania, he arrived in New Zealand in 1952.

According to family Mr Green died peacefully at his home. The death notice read:

Loved husband of Moira. Loved father and father-in-law of John and Trish, Maryanne and Mark, Gerard and Cathy, Frances and Gerry and Eamonn. Loved Pops of his 12 grandchildren and his 1 great-grandchild. May he rest in peace.

Requiem Mass will be celebrated at the Church of Christ the King Catholic Church, 260 Richardson Road, Owairaka on Thursday July 19 at 1.30pm to be followed by a private cremation.

In lieu of flowers donations to Mercy Hospice, PO Box 47693, Ponsonby would be appreciated. All communications to the Green Family, c/- PO Box 56013, Dominion Road, Auckland.

Respected for his sense of humour, straight talking and interest in Irish affairs in New Zealand and Ireland. A much loved leader and figurehead in our community who will be sadly missed, particularly at AGM's. Our deepest sympathy to all the family . Rest in Peace.
