Im Themightyquinn overcome the flu to win this year's (March 2) Inter Dominion grand final, and a stable virus put him out of last year's New Zealand Cup. Now the 7-year-old champion has copped more bad luck that could have seen him run his last race.
The son of's trainer Gary Hall Senior said his stable-star trialled in Perth yesterday (Sunday June 17) when he suffered problems with his heart.
"He couldn't even complete a lap. There was definitely something wrong with his heart - it was definitely out. We had him checked and found out he suffered from a heart fibrillation.
"He's okay now but it is going to be months before we can make a call on his future. All I want to say at this point is that he is not retired, but it will be some time if and when we race him again," Hall Sr said.
He considered the gelding's problem serious and said a proposed New Zealand Cup mission was now off.
"The horse's health comes first. We won't be making any decisions on his racing career until he is well. But it's going to take some time and at this stage I'd say the New Zealand Cup is definitely off," Hall Sr said.
"If he's not back to his best when he is well, we won't be racing him. I only want to race him in peak form," Hall Sr added.
Asked if defending his Inter Dominion title in New South Wales, was now the long-term goal, Hall Sr replied:
"That's too far away. I can't comment about his future racing career because all I'm worried about now is his health. What I would like to stress though is he is not retired."
The two-Inter Dominion and 2011 Auckland Cup champion has raced 84 times for 39 wins, 27 placings and $3,292,106. His quickest winning mile is 1:53.5.
