Riverside trainer Phil Shatford - And club member Mark Jones take a break after a workout

Former World Champion driver Mark Jones isn't planning on giving up harness racing for a tilt at the world boxing title, but he is planning on putting plenty of training into his hobby sport over the next month or so.

Jones has recently had a fight confirmed for the 28th of February, Where he is to fight on the under card of up and coming star heavy weight boxer Joseph Parker on a televised fight night.

When asked about his fighting history, Jones a member of the Riverside Boxing Club, confirmed he had only had the one ‘official’ fight, in which he had won on points.

“That fight must have been about two-years ago now, and I took six-weeks off training over Christmas/New Year, Year so I’m coming in on the fresh side,” stated Jones.

“I’ve got a lot of work to put in over the next month. I’ve just come from a very tiring work-out at the Gym now,” said Jones at last night’s (Thursday January 25) meeting at Addington.

Jones will be looking to strike with his noted left-hand hook come the 28th of February.

“I don’t have the same strength in that as I used to."

I’m sure the odd horse would beg to differ.

Jones has boxing in his blood. His late grandfather Derek Jones was a very good boxer and held a few titles in his time, while father Peter has a boxing record of nine once again ‘official’ fights for seven wins and two losses.

It will be interesting to see if Jones is still going by the nickname ‘FIG’ come the 29th of February.
