After all the hoopla of Jewels day at Cambridge yesterday, harness racing today, at a low-key Ashburton meeting was a return to normality. But that’s not to say there weren't some very promising horses racing.
The mares and fillies mile looked a two horse affair on paper between the very speedy Lis Mara 3 year old filly, Delightful Dash and the talented 4 year old Red River Hanover mare Karanga Red Fantasy.
Delightful Dash with Dexter Dunn in the bike led with ease from barrier six with Karanga Red Fantasy and Gavin Smith dropping straight onto her back from barrier three. Dexter kept up a very solid tempo and turning for home looked to going as good as anything. But Gavin Smith was only foxing and passing the 150 meters mark he eased Karanga Red Fantasy out of the trial and she brushed past Delightful Dash in the shadows of the post to record her fourth career win in just her seventh race day appearance.
She stopped the clock at a very impressive 1:54.1 with closing sectionals of 55.7 and 26.9.
Delightful Dash lost no admirers in finishing a half-length away in second while Crimson Glory was the best of the rest, running into third four and a half lengths from the winner.
The first two to finish today both appear capable of further wins in the near future.
