This week, Mark Jones has shared his opinion on why he believes the New Zealand harness racing season should be in line with Australia and run from 01 September to 31 August.
“I think it would be great if our season went from September to September.”
“The breeders would be the main people that would need to agree as it may affect them the most, but we generally don’t have August foals.”
“One of the main benefits of the change would be we won’t have a lull in racing numbers during August, as the three-year-olds would carry through to September to try and pick up penalty free wins. The two-year-olds would also race on to try and get penalty free wins, therefore keeping racing numbers up until the better horses come back at the end of September.”
“We now have more and more horses targeting the Breeders Crown Series, and those results really should count towards the Harness Award winners, so for this to happen it needs to be included as part of our season.”
“I definitely think it is something that needs to be tried and if it doesn’t work, what have we lost?”
