Catalina Morgan ($8.00) closed from last place on the final turn to edge race favorite Hypnotize in winning the $16,000 Mares Open Pace at the Isle Pompano Park Friday in 1:53.3. The third race feature saw Lucy Lucy and driver Anthony Napolitano shoot out to the early lead but they were challenged early and by the opening quarter mile in :26.4 it was Hypnotize and driver Dan Clements on the lead.
They raced Indian-style to the half mile in :56.1 and as the field started up the backstretch, Wally Hennessey came first over with Velvet Eileen and they went after the race leaders to the three-quarter mile marker in 1:24.4. At this point driver Denis St Pierre had Catalina Morgan moving up on the outside behind Velvet Eileen and poised to strike.
As they came down the stretch, Pierre swung Catalina Morgan three-wide and the mare responded with a :28 second last quarter mile to win by a half length. Hypnotize held for second with Lucy Lucy third.
