Wednesday's scheduled start of the 2014 Illinois harness racing season has been pushed back after contract negotiations between the Illinois Harness Horsemen's Association and Balmoral Park and Maywood Park management reached an impasse.

Racing was originally scheduled to begin on Wednesday at Balmoral Park. Maywood Park's Thursday opening also will likely be scrapped.

The Illinois Racing Board requires us to have a contract before we race and we've been unable to come to terms with the racetracks in regards to handling our purse account," said Tony Somone, IHHA's executive director. "We're hopeful things can be worked out in time for our season to start by this weekend.'

Members of the IRB have been mediating meetings between the two groups. Another is scheduled for today.
