Kevin Chapman has always thought Locharburn was something very special and tonight he confirmed it.
The imposing son of Christian Cullen left the gate with wings on from his ace alley, running them along in front, before kicking boldly down the back and then again in the straight to hold off Maxim, who enjoyed a cushy run on Locharburn’s back.
Locharburn paced the 2200 metre journey in a stunning 2-39.3, bettering the previous 3YO New Zealand record of none other than Terror To Love by 0.3 of a second.
“I have been excited about this horse since the first time I sat behind him,” said driver Dexter Dunn. “He still isn’t entirely happy on this track, which is scary when you consider he went a New Zealand record tonight.
Dunn said that he knew Locharburn wasn’t 100% around the last bend, which is why he opted to take the sting out of his rivals down the back straight.
“I wanted to be clear on the bend, so I could ease him around it, before really asking him to sprint,” said Dunn.
The win was Chapman’s second in the race, having won it with Four Starzzz Flash back in 2009.
“Last time Kev (Chapman) won this race I finished second to him, so it was nice to have his colours on tonight,” laughed Dunn.
