Champion pacer Lombo Pocket Watch has a stranglehold on the $100,000 McInerney Ford Classic and $175,000 XXXX Gold Golden Nugget after he returned to racing in magnificent fashion at Gloucester Park on Friday night (November 30).

The flying grey simply toyed with his rivals in scoring a runaway victory over Captain Bluff and Clancy The Rocket in a prelude of the Nugget.

His victory by just over 13m was most impressive and it is virtually impossible to suggest that any other four-year-old will be able to extend him in the big races to be decided at Gloucester Park on the next two Friday nights.

Driver Gavin Fitzpatrick was bubbling with enthusiasm after the stallion had rated 2.0.4 over the 2536m journey. It was a commanding performance at the horse’s first appearance for 15 weeks.

“He felt good and he’s pretty close to his top,” Fitzpatrick said. “He’s got brilliant speed and that’s his best attribute. And he showed tonight that he can stay as well.”

Lombo Pocket Watch, favourite at 5/2 on, was not bustled out from his wide barrier at No. 8 and Fitzpatrick was content to let him settle down in 11th position.

After one circuit, and with two laps to travel, Lombo Pocket Watch took off three wide and sprinted so fast that he burst past the pacemaker Captain Bluff and into the lead with 1400m to travel. He was not pushed out as he covered the final 800m in 58.3sec.

This was Lombo Pocket Watch’s 30th win from 38 starts and it boosted his prizemoney to $1,108,253.

New Zealand mare Aloha Christian, second favourite at 4/1, disappointed at her Australian debut in finishing ninth. After racing three wide early, she settled in the one-out, one-back position and was shuffled back to sixth at the bell before racing wide in the final circuit. There is little doubt she will take considerable benefit from the run.
