While the initial contribution target of the Lou Pena sponsored Bronte Epilepsy Research Foundation was $7000, a total of over $15,000 was amassed through the harness racing event and the initiative of Lou Pena. Lou reached out to some fellow horsemen and other interested parties and they responded big time.
In addition to Mr. Pena and the California Amateur Driving Club, donations were received from harness racing's George Brennan, Andy Miller, Brian Solden, and John Urbanski as well as from LA Lakers VP Jeannie Buss.
Foundation President Mary Lou Sortie was thrilled by the outpouring of support and had this to say about Lou Pena and his supporters, "you are not only incredible ambassadors of your sport, but generous and caring folks that reach out to the community and provide the opportunity for awareness, and much needed funding for research efforts to find a cure for Epilepsy."
When hearing about the additional donations, Lou Pena was astounded, "I am so happy that the many of the folks that support me in racing have gone far above and beyond the call and helped out the Bronte Foundation. The racing series had so much good come out of it and I am happy for the California horsemen that needed such a boost. I hope folks in the industry take note of what good can be done when racing supports a charitable cause. It's one of those rare times that all the horses in the race win!"
