DOVER, Del.— Master Clave won his second $20,000 Delaware Standardbred Breeders Fund (DSBF) Three-Year-Old Male Trot prelim while Jiggs recorded his first during 2nd leg harness racing action at Dover Downs on Monday, April 3.
Unlike last week when Master Clave made an untimely break just before the starting gate opened and quickly Ross Wolfenden got him back trotting before catching the field and quickly taking the lead on the way to winning his first $20,000 DSBF prelim, this time it was easier with the same result. Wolfenden took the early lead and was never troubled on the way to a 1:58.4 triumph. Ben Brooks bred and owns the Master Lavec-Dilly Dally Della gelding, now seven for 10 lifetime and a winner of $116,750 in purses. Master Kingpin (Art Stafford Jr.) came on to finish second. Dusty Fool (Carlo Poliseno) was third.
Rodney Mitchell's Jiggs overtook favorite Moonshine Lavec (Sean Bier) in the stretch to win the second $20,000 DSBF prelim, a reverse of last week's finish. Vic Kirby drove Jiggs from off the pace to register a 2:00 victory for the Leigh Raymer trained altered son of Giant Hit-Mystic Hill. I was the first win of the year for the $62,400 career winner. Yagot A Winner (Poliseno) was the third-place finisher.
The top eight point-getters after two prelim divisions return next Monday for a $100,000 DSBF Final.
FOUR $20,000 DSBF SOPH FILLY PACE 2nd LEG PRELIMS TUESDAY
Logan’s Girl and Spanish Dream, both owned by JoAnn Looney-King and driven by Vic Kirby for trainer Jim King, seek second straight $20,000 Delaware Standardbred Breeders Fund (DSBF) Three-Year-Old Filly Pace preliminary legs on Tuesdays distaff card at Dover Downs. Post time is 4:30 p.m.
Logan’s Girl won her 1st $20,000 leg event by a neck in 1:53.1for her second win in three races this year. The winner of nine of 12 career starts has banked $157.840.
While winning seven of nine starts last year winning $147,840 in purses. Donna Messick and Nanticoke Racing’s Cashmere’s Delight finished second for trainer Les Givens and driver Jim Morand last week. Westwind Roddylee, bred and owned by Joel and Dianne Halpern was a third-place finisher for Tim Tetrick and trainer Jason Skinner. The rest of the field is made up by the Whiz Kids Stable’s Scarlability, trained and driven by Bart Dalious and Rainbow Zen, with Allan Davis in the bike for trainer Bob White and owners Charles Winbrow and Jim Lunn.
Spanish Dream (Kirby) , a wire-to-wire 1:54.1 winner week also leaves from the rail in the second $20,000 DSBF prelim. She is a six-time winner of 11 races lifetime. Two second-place finishers last week lead her rivals. Thompson Sisters Racing’s Free Flight Frank (Corey Callahan) raced strongly last Monday and Wyatt Starkey and co-owner trainer-driver Art Stafford’s Lunar Phase, who also closed well. She’s No Spinster (Davis) owned by Davis, Yencer, Ashley and Cain, trained by Joe Hundertpfund, I Won Them Both (Montrell Teague) bred and owned by George Teague and trained by Clyde Francis, and breeder, owner and trainer Leigh Louthan’s X Spinsiver (Tim Tetrick) complete the starters.
Another King stable performer Lillisbagsrpacking is the one to beat in a third $20,000 DSBF prelim. She has been second in her three 2017 starts with Vic Kirby at the controls. Scott Woogen’s KJ Dale (Tetrick) was third last time as was Green Valley Racing’s A Lady Sizzling (Tony Morgan) trained by Brian Armour.
Renegade Hussie (Davis) racing for owners trainer Paul and Lorie Davis and Preston Burris, So Many Friends (George Dennis) trained by Kevin Lare for Jim Fleming and Frank Chick has post 1 with Leigh Louthan bred, owned and trained Spinvisible (Callahan) are the other opponents.
The fourth and final $20,000 DSBF event is led by George Teague’s Bad Mama (M.Teague) and George Leager’s Diva Demands (Callahan), both prelim winner last time. Magicinthemoonlite (Tetrick) trained by Arlene Cameron for owners Linda Condor and Kevin Freeman, Giga Spin, bred, owned, trained by Leigh Louthan head the opposition.
After the two DSBF prelims, the top eight-point getters return for next week’s $100,000 final.
A top $20,000 Mares Open Handicap pace heads the non-stakes program. KDK Standardbred’s Apple Bottom Jeans (Teague) a1:51.4 winner last Wednesday after setting the Rosecroft track record the week before, meets five-times event winner Bryan Truitt’s Enhance Your Mind (Kirby), JFE Enterprise’s Scandalicious (Tetrick), Gary Ewing, owned and trained Sweet Bobbie (Stafford Jr.), seven-time winner Barbara’s Shadow (Kirby) steps up in class for Kirby, trainer Leigh Raymer and Brian Hoffecker and making her first start of the season is fast Terror At Night (Morand) for owners Ed Maas, Arlene Paisley and Nanticoke Racing.
An excellent supporting card is on the 15-race Tuesday program.
