Melton Plate weekend is starting to become one of the landmark’s on the trots calendar for.
For the second year running he captured the major race of the night on the weekend of his son, Noah's, birthday.
And the spoils weren’t just with the winner as Chancellor Cullen ran second behind his stablemate Magical Telf.
Underrated he might have been, Magical Telf has taken his record to 14 wins from 18 starts and proved he can mix it in the highest company with his Group 2 win tonight.
Starting from barrier two he was allowed to find his feet as the third of the Braun trio, Rule Like A King, held out the early challengers before Chancellor Cullen rolled around the field to take it up.
Regal Knight pulled hard outside the leader, applying just enough pressure to soften up the odds-on favourite and allow Magical Telf to pull three-wide off the back and storm down the outside to take the race.
The race was timed in a mile rate of 1:54.7 with the last half coming in a slashing 55.2sec last half.
The margins were just over a metre between first and second with a further 10 metres back to Mark Dennis in third.
Restrepo appeared to be the unlucky horse in the race, copping a check off the back and racing roughly for a few strides before gathering himself to run home for fourth.
Greg Sugars spoke to Rob Auber following the race about the joys of winning another big race.
“He had a lovely run in transit and Dean knows how to get them right for the big races and he has done a terrific job to quinella a race like this,” Sugars said.
“He’s a lovely horse to drive; his win/loss ratio is quite impressive; he may not be as flashy I suppose as a few other horses going around at the minute but he’s definitely dangerous with the right trip and with some speed on.”
And Braun continued to heap the praise on his winner, explaining that having some of his most loyal owners in the horse made it all the sweeter.
“He’s a lovely horse, some of my best owners own him with me so it was just good that Greg (Sugars, driver) could get back on and win for me. It’s just hard to win these sort of races and we’ve been lucky enough to win two,” Braun said.
“Chancellor Cullen went terrific, he was wide for a long way early and he stick on pretty good.”
