One of New Zealand's better performed harness racing exports to North America in the last few years is finally starting to turn his form around in his new homeland.
Mah Sish had a stellar career down under and was closing in on a million dollar in stake earnings when he was exported to North America last May.
A free going son of Mach Three, Mah Sish looked perfectly suited to mile racing and big things were expected of him in North America.
However all that came to nothing when in his first qualifying race in June last year he was very scratchy in his action and that would be his only look at a race track for nearly twelve months.
His Kiwi born mentor, "Nifty" Norman has nursed him back to the track and he is slowly starting to show the kind of form that he showed in the Southern Hemisphere.
Although it is still early days there are signs that the old Mah Sish is back and several of his recent runs have been more like his old self.
Mah Sish had a nice win on the half mile Freehold track in early May in 1:55.2 before a couple of placings at the Meadowlands in good time hinted he was on his way back.
He then had three runs at the leading track in Canada at Mohawk Raceway and although not winning efforts he did break 1:50 in one of those runs and was a certainty beaten at his third start there.
Therefore when he lined up at The Meadowlands last Saturday, Mah Sish was well supported on the tote to win his second race of the year.
Driver David Miller settled him fourth early as the first quarter went by in 26.2 and the half in 54.
Passing the half Mah Sish was flushed out and from there David Miller just let him run and Mah Sish grabbed the lead before the corner and shot away and hid from the opposition in a very smart performance.
Mah Sish stopped the timer in 1:49.2 and seemed to do it with a fair bit in reserve.
There are plenty of options for Mah Sish race wise over the next few months but the pleasing thing is he finally got to show the North Americans a little bit of his class.
