WILKES-BARRE PA-- Maven ($2.60) was like the Energizer Bunny in the $250,000 Open Mare Trot event in the Breeders Crown Championships Saturday night at Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs -- he just kept on going and going and going ... right to the winners circle after a simple 1:52.3 victory over sloppy going.
Maven, who also was a Breeders Crown winner in 2012 as a three-year-old, was reserved in fourth early as another former Crown champion, Cedar Dove, set sail to wrest the early lead from D'Orsay and set fractions of 27, 56.4, and 1:24.1. Driver , winning his second Crown event among four victories on the card to this point, directed Maven up to challenge just under the finish line the first time, and slowly but surely the four-year-old daughter of advanced, reaching the leader entering the final turn and challenging around it, with the only other horse staying connected, pocketsitting D'Orsay, still close, but not gaining.
Turning for home it was apparent the heavy favorite still had plenty of trot left, and Gingras only had to lay his whip on the winner's tail to have her strong to the finish, winning by 2 1/4 lengths over the game Cedar Dove, with D'Orsay holding on for third; Unefoisdansmavie and Beatgoeson Hanover collected the last checks. The third former Crown winner in this contest, Check Me Out, lost a few lengths at the start with a couple of stuttersteps, regained her composure to get back to second-over position, but finally ruined her chances with a second break before headstretch.
Gingras commented after the race: "That was her kind of trip -- going up first-over and running them down. She did it all on her own tonight -- I didn't have to chase after her at all."
Maven is trained by , and owned by Bill Donovan of Florida. Her breeder is All La Nuova Sbarra SRL, an Italian/Floridian concern, and her career bankroll is now $1,379,969.
