Mcardle is yet another example of how fickle the harness racing breeding industry is.
A champion racehorse in the USA as a 2+3 +4yr old with earnings of $2,455,609, Mcardle made an immediate impression when he first went to stud leaving One More Laugh ($2,618,000) from his first crop.
So it was a bit of a coup for southern hemisphere breeders when it was announced he would be shuttling to Nevele R stud in Canterbury which was co-founded by his namesake,Bob Mcardle.
Serving just 83 mares in his first year, his number of mares served grew rapidly in the following years as his young stock impressed trainers and owners.
From his first crop to race down under he produced the champion Tintin In America ($934,000) and his siring future looked assured.
His service fee quickly rose to $9000 and the mares streamed in the gate.
But in the seasons that followed the glow slowly wore off Mcardle. Doubts started to be raised about wheather his stock were suited to the racing scene in NZ and Australia with our emphasis on distance racing.
Great over the shorter trips but not such good stayers was a tag that quickly became attached to him.
When no horse of the calibre of Tintin In America was forthcoming from his 2nd and 3rd crops, the breeders deserted him as quickly as they had supported him in the first place. His service fee was slashed to $4000 and commerical breeders shunned him.
But through all the turmoil, Mcardle has continued to do what he does best---Leave winners-- and plenty of high quality ones to boot.
His record now suggests that he should be serving larger books than he is but once a sire has a knock it is incredibly hard to shake that impression in the minds of breeders.
In the 2012/2013 season he finished in the top 6 in the 2yr old-- 3yr old-- 4yr old-- and all age group of stakes won in NZ which is a great result given all the hurdles he has faced.
So what does the lifetime record of Mcardle look like;
USA--- Winners --305
Stakes Won $32,000,000+ includes One More Laugh ($2,618,000)
Stakes won $1,250,000+ includes the Triple Oaks winner--Nomoresurprises
Stakes won---$5,272,000+ includes Tintin In America ($934,000), Five Star Anvil($465,000)
Elusive Chick ($237,000) and Aslan ($166,000)
So closing in on $40,000,000 lifetime and over 600 winners worldwide. Maybe it's time for breeders to put aside their perceptions about Mcardle and to take another look at this quiet achiever.
