As many will be aware prior to the late November 2015 date for the Harness Racing Club, it would appear that the grass track at Orari had been sprayed with a chemical that badly affected the grass cover in parts of the home straight and the bend going out of the straight.
Whilst the Club have tried to find out what exactly happened to the track, they have also been proactive in repairing the surface as quickly as possible. HRNZ Track and Venue Manager- John Denton has been in constant contact with the Club in relation to this.
The Club direct drilled the track immediately following the November race date to establish new turf in the affected areas. Unfortunately there are still areas of the track where the grass seed has not established itself leaving prominent dry patches which are not consistent with the rest of the track.
The worst affected areas are 100m prior to the finish line and then 50m past the finish line with the majority of damage on the running line. After consultation between RIU Stewards, John Denton, Club officials and HRNZ , it has been decided the best course of action to allow the meeting to go ahead is for the pylons to stay out from the point of the passing lane(2.4m) and remain so until the apex of the bend out of the straight.
This will have the effect of providing a better racing strip for the horses and eliminate the need for them to race over the majority of the affected grass area. This will also result in the Club racing this meeting only without a passing lane.
This decision has been made in the interest of safety and to allow the Club to run the meeting on their home track.
The Clubs November race date was very successful and they look forward to another fantastic grass track meeting on 31st January.
