High flying harness racing trainer Nigel McGrath has someone to thank for his ongoing success over recent weeks other than his own abilities as a horseman and that of his race stock. McGrath has the services of stable foreman Megan McIntyre to lean on.

The hard working 22 year old was rewarded for her duties at last night's (Thursday) New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club's meeting at Addington Raceway when driving her first official winner. And Appropriately it was behind Gimmli, a horse trained by her boss.

"It was a real buzz driving my first winner, particularly that it was one of Nigel's," she said. The Southern lass was born and bred in Invercargill and with parents Richard and Maureen heavily involved, she was destined to become part of the industry. A shift to Canterbury in pursuit of better opportunities and a change of lifestyle, saw McIntyre attached to the stable of Bruce Negus under the guidance of Mark Jones. Following a solid grounding it was off to the McGrath barn to further her career. With her employer realising pretty quickly he had a horsewoman worth hanging onto, McIntyre was promoted to the position of stable foreman.

"My main focus is on training, I enjoy that side of it and get to travel alot with the horses. I still like driving but it's very much secondary." Megan McIntyre will assume her role as travelling foreman this week when she treks North to Cambridge with Jewels aspirants Beaudiene Christian, Sonofanearl, Anvil's Best Ever and Anvil On Fire.
