Jeffrey Bamond had one aim when he got into the harness racing industry and that was to race horses.
The breeding side of the industry was not something he really wanted to get into but he has accumulated some outstanding racemares over the years and when it gets to the point where their racing career are coming to an end, Jeffrey prefers to sell those mares rather than breed from them.
One of those special mares Jeffrey has raced over the last few years is the daughter of Artiscape in Shelliscape.
Sold as a yearling through Lexington for $25,000, Shelliscape became a bit of a Breeders Crown specialist during her career.
As a two year old Shelliscape ran fourth in the Breeders Crown Final and as a three year year she finished a top second to the outstanding filly American Jewel 1:48.2 ($1,834,823) in the Breeders Crown final of that year.
At four she was too good for the great racemare Rocklamation 1:48.3 ($2,266,129) in the Breeders Crown Final that season and repeated the dose as a five year old with Rocklamation again running second to her in the Breeders Crown final.
By the time Shelliscape called time on her racing career she had racked up 16 wins for stakes totaling $1,153,540 with a best time of 1:49.1.
Shelliscape is still the fastest mare over a half mile track in the history of the sport.
The sire of Shelliscape in Artiscape needs no introduction as he has been an elite sire for well over a decade.
His stats are outstanding with stakes earnings to date of $96,788,768 with nine millionaires and 33 in 1:50
The dam of Shelliscape is the smart Direct Scooter mare Shell I Scoot 1:54.1 ($233,862) who apart from Shelliscape has also produced VC Scooter 1:51.4 ($391,355) Shell I Attack 1:54.1 ($191,422) and Scoot To Connect 1:53.1 ($171,184)
Shell I Scoot is a half sister to the Artsplace mare Framed Print 1:54.3 ($66,220) who has produced the high class son of The Panderosa in Print It 1:50 ($838,755).
Jeffrey has put Shelliscape in foal to the leading sire Somebeachsomewhere and plans to offer her for sale later this year.
" The plan is to sell her at Harrisburg in November but I am open to offers before that.
" The breeding side of the industry is not my thing and this is the first mare I have been left with at the end of her career," Jeffrey told Harnesslink earlier this week.
Bamond Racing has also recently started importing racehorses from the Southern Hemisphere and Jeffrey is happy with how things have gone to date.
" It has gone really well to date with no problems at all.
" To be honest it has all gone better than I thought it would," Jeffrey said.
With Bamond Racing committed to racing horses, the sale of a great racemare such as Shelliscape is a wonderful opportunity for a breeding farm or breeding partnership to acquire such a high profile commercial mare.
