It has been confirmed that after the finish of the $603,000 Maple Leaf Trot Final at Mohawk Raceway, Modern Family, who had finished fourth, collapsed in the race paddock and died.
Reports on why the horse died were not available pending a full investigation.
Trained and co-owned by Daryl Bier with Charles Dombeck and Richard Poillucci, Modern Family was a five-year-old stallion by Cantab Hall. He had lifetime earnings of $566,000, a race record of 51 starts, 19 wins, 8 seconds and 5 third place finishes. In just 2014 he was off to a good start with 6 wins, 6 seconds and 1 third in just 14 starts with earnings of $300,000.
His major victories came in the $200,000 Charlie Hill Memorial, $100,000 Hambletonian Matturity and he was victorious in Open and Preferred Trots at tracks throughout the east coast.
