Long-serving Nevele R Stud Master Kevin Roberson is calling it a day, and on the 1st of April will move back to Australia. The highly competent harness racing horseman has spent 25 years at the South Islands biggest standardbred stud farm, and over this time has served approximately 15,000 mares.

"There have been some good years and some bad years but overall it has been a very enjoyable time," said Roberson.

"It's been a pleasure to work with stallions of such quality," he added.

Of the stallions Roberson has worked with, he rates the new kid on the block, Changeover as the best.

"He is without a doubt the finest stallion I've been involved with. He has got it all - type, temperament, breeding and obviously the race record."

"He is one out of the box alright. I will be absolutely shocked if he doesn't make it," he added.

"Although my time at Nevele R has been enjoyable, it has also been very full on, so it will be nice to slip into retirement."

Before moving to New Zealand, Roberson both trained and drove in Australia.

"I held a Metropolitan licence and trained and drove a few winners, but that was a fair few years back now," quipped Roberson.

"I've been involved in the industry my whole life, my grandfather and uncle were both heavily involved and I was introduced to the sport when I was only about 5 or 6."

As well as his 25 years at Nevele R, Kevin has also spent 10-12 years working in stud farms in Australia and two years at Harness World Bloodstock in Auckland.

"I'm looking forward to getting back to Australia, all my family are still over there and it will be good to spend more time with the grand-kids," said Kevin.

"I may still do some seasonal work over there, I will just see how things pan out." He added.

Roberson is going to re-locate in New South Wales, but is unsure of his exact destination just yet.

A credit to Kevin Roberson ability as a stud master is whilst serving such a large quantity of mares, Nevele R has still managed to maintain one of the best mares' served to mares in foal ratios in the country.
