Newcastle Harness Racing Club has appointed former Wyong Race Club Chief Executive Tony Drew as its new General Manager.

Drew will start next month in the role left vacant when Ross Gigg died suddenly on May 8 from a heart attack at age 58.

The former Penrith Panthers centre spent 22 years in the job and became a highly respected and much loved figure in harness racing.

Drew has a long history in racing administration, serving as Racing and Operations Manager at Newcastle Jockey Club for a decade then as CEO at Wyong from 2000 to late last year.

Drew will commence his duties with the Newcastle HRC in a fortnight's time.
