Victorian harness racing trainer Maree Caldow celebrated her first winner in Tasmania when her smart three-year-old filly Nickle Miss scored an impressive win in the SEW Eurodrive Tasmanian oaks in Hobart on Sunday night.

Nickle Miss ($6) drew the inside of the second row which was always going to be an obstacle but when driver John Caldow had her off the fence and challenging for the lead after travelling only 400 metres the bad draw fears were allayed.

Once in the lead she was rated superbly by Caldow and the filly had all the answers when challenged by the odds-on favourite Bebop all the way up the home straight with local filly Maggie Kennedy a distant third.

"We had doubts about being able to overcome the draw but my husband has done it again by producing a brilliant drive," Maree Caldow said.

"This is my first major win in Tasmania. I've had to settle for minor placings in the past so it's nice to finally have a Group 1 winner in Tasmania," she said.

"This is a very nice filly with a future and she deserves to get a Group win under her belt," she said.

The Grinfromeartoear filly went into the race with only one win to her credit and that was in a 3A0 at Maryborough at her start prior to tackling the Oaks.

"This race has always been on the agenda because she had shown us a lot without winning," the trainer said.

Bebop was sent out the $1.70 favourite and after working to the breeze she had every chance to run the eventual winner down but wasn't up to the task

Maggie Kennedy ran home well along the rails to grab third but at5 no stage threatened the first two placegetters.

Caldow said Nickle Miss will be aimed at the Victorian Sires Stakes series as her next main mission.
