The third race on the Monday card of June 22 at Hazel Park Raceway will be a trot for members of either the mid-west or eastern regions of the C.K.G. Billings Amateur driving Series. Nine outstanding amateur reinsmen will try to add to their seasonal point totals of which only the tops in points in their respective regions will get a chance to compete in the Regional Finals.
And with good racing luck there many will move on to compete in the Delvin Miller Memorial Driving Gold, Silver, and Bronze Cup Championships, which this year will be contested at The Meadows in western Pennsylvania on Monday, December 7.
Though slated as a wild card event most of the competitors in the Hazel Park Raceway split are members of the mid-west region.
Headlining the event there is Steve "You're Never Too" Oldford who was the Billings Point Champion last year and "Trader Bud" Hatfield, a former National Amateur Driver of the Year. Oldford, a sales rep from Croswell, MI, will handle Eng-amer Bobby and start from post position two while "the Trader" , the Car Baron of Columbus, Ohio, has Absolute Resolve from the pole position.
That event will be seasonal debuts for "Tiny Tim" Miller, a construction executive from Dundee, Ohio who finished third last season in the Delvin Miller Gold Cup Final, and for Dean What Am I Bid" Beachy, an auctioneer from Berlin, Ohio. Both are venerable competitors and outstanding amateur reinsmen.
Though many of the early Billings events this year were wild card contests many who have already driven in the series have earned points in both regions. After the Billings on July 3rd at Historic Track in Trot Town USA most members will not only compete in but will earn points in the respective regions.
For the aforementioned reasons the Mid-west Region leaderboard is currently similar to the eastern region's.
The Midwest region leaderboard is as follows: "Tar Heel Tom "Williams' 55 points is 15 more than runner-up Steve Oldford's 40. Tony "the Capo" Verruso is third with 38 points, followed by Dave "Yes It's True" Offenberg (33); and "Joltin' Joe" Pennacchio (29) and Eric "the Driving NYC Fireman" Taddeo, (29). Rounding out the top ten in the midwest are Todd ‘the Downeaster" Whitney (28) Dave "Linemaster" Ehrenberg (27) Terry ‘the Dairy Queen" Donnelly (25) and Rob "Rapid Rail" Krivelin (24).
