Nuncio rewrote the all age track record for trotters

Nuncio and Hall of Fame driver John Campbell rewrote the track record for freshman trotters with an amazing 1:53 triumph at Dover Downs Sunday in winning the $166,650 Matron Stakes for two-year-old trotting colts.

Campbell sent Nuncio to the front early but that was short lived as Skates N Plate, a 33-1 long shot for driver Simon Allard, was determined to get to the lead by the opening quarter mile in :26.3. But Campbell wasted little time sending Nuncio back to the front well before the half mile in :55.

Once in the backstretch, Don Dorado (Tim Tetrick) came first-over but was unable to collar the leader at the three-quarters in 1:24. Then after the final turn it was all Campbell and Nuncio scoring with ease by three and one-half lengths. Skates N Plates held for second place with Don Dorado third.

“He raced very well,” Campbell said. “Last week he was on the bit too much even though he was on the lead. Tonight he was more manageable and I was able to get him to relax the third quarter. Then he finished up strong. He has raced well every start this year. He just had the misfortune to have to go against Father Patrick most of the season. He has a tremendous amount of natural talent. He has a smooth gait and it does not matter what track surface he races on. I’m looking forward to him coming back next year and being a horse that races in all the top stakes.”

It was the second straight win and fifth on the year in just nine starts for Nuncio. The son of Andover Hall is trained by Scott Andrews for the Stall TZ, Inc. Stables of Vero Beach, FL.

Nuncio surpassed the previous mark for two-year-olds by a full two seconds (1:55) over Explosive Matters.
