Harness racing fans witnessed one of the fastest miles in the Maritimes Saturday night at Red Shores Racetrack & Casino when N.S. owned As Tough As Nails stopped the timer in a stunning 1:55.1 over the legendary Charlottetown Driving Park oval.

The win came in the first elimination of the Cecil Ladner Memorial when driver Marc Whebby watched race favorites Oakmont, in line to Danny Romo, and Outlawpositivcharg, with Terry Gallant, battle through stiff opening panels. The Wayne Whebby owned pacer took over at the three-quarter pole and pounced to a three length lead for his fourth win in a row. Putnams Force finished second with Oakmont third. Roscoes Child rallied for fourth.

Ontario invader Joseph Michael and driver Todd Trites won the second Ladner elimination in 1:57.1 after blasting to the front from post seven. "He made it look easy tonight," said Trites in a trackside interview following the race. "I wouldn't want to try it from post seven in the final. He's a nice horse to drive," said the N.B. based pilot.

The post time favorite turned away pocket-sitter Matt Trapper and Brian Andrew while Oakrock Almighty was third for Ron Matheson. Ultimate Success was fourth for Lenny Myers.

Jepson Hanover, owned by Paul Gray, Halifax, N.S., captured the Joe MacRae Memorial in 1:56.1 by a head over Blue Star Outlaw and Jason Hughes. Danny Romo did the driving.

Racing returns Wednesday at Red Shores Summerside and Thursday at Red Shores Charlottetown. Post time is 7pm. Saturday features the Cecil Ladner Memorial Final and the Maritime Breeders Association Series. Post time is 6pm with the action carried world-wide at
