The Group two Prix Reine du Corta is the first of two preparations today at Vincennes for the Criterium des 3 Ans in late December and the fillies race may indeed be the best guide to the first of the Great French Classiques.
The A generation has so far been dominated by its females with four of the top five and seven of the top ten earners being fillies.
They have won all the Group one races available to 3YOs with Avila winning the Criterium des Jeunes and the Prix de l’Etoile, with Axelle Dark winning the Prix Albert Viel in the most prestigious “attelle” races - in the sulky.
And the Group one monte races have also gone the way of the fillies with Almira Marancourt winning the Saint-Leger des Trotteurs, Arca des Jacquets winning Prix d’Essai, while Anastasia Fella won the Prix des Elites a week after being second in the bike behind Avila in the Prix de l’Etoile.
Ready Cash has had a sensational start as a sire of fillies with the top two earners Axelle Dark and Avila and also Azalee de Vigne who was third in the Group one Saint-Leger des Trotteurs being by France’s champion.
The big three are all here with Phillipe Allaire’s duo of Axelle Dark and Avila (the latter in the hands of Ready Cash’s trainer Thierry Duvaldestin) facing Fabrice Souloy’s super filly Anastasia Fella, a daughter of Goetmals Wood.
Axelle Dark was skittled in her last race the Prix de l’Etoile just as she was making a very strong bid for the lead and if she can trot all the way will be the favourite to rack up win number eight in her seventeenth start for her owner-trainer.
Avila really bears the stamp of her sire in looks and has arguably the better record with seven wins from 13 outings, having never finished further back than fourth and except for the two occasions she has gone off stride.
Anastasia Fella has been the big improver of late and there really is very little now between the top three fillies, and with given the right run by Franck Nivard she can win this.
Emmanuel Allard Quaker Jet filly Alizea du Kastel beat Axelle Dark in the Group two Prix Marcel Dejean a year ago, but is probably a little way off them now while Asana Trembladaise (Kuadro Wild) was second in the Group one Saint-Leger des Trotteurs and is much more of a threat under saddle, this being only her fourth start in a bike in 12 outings.
