It’s party time in Arcadia tonight after the Group 1 success of Imamenace in the Empire Stallions Vicbred Super Series 3YO Colts and Geldings Final at Tabcorp Park Melton.
The win was hobby trainer Peter Cormican’s first Group 1 success and he was predictably thrilled.
“This is the first time (I’ve won a Group 1) and I’m going to make the most of it, let me tell you,” he said post-race.
Driven by Greg Sugars, Imamenace, who is a huge horse and was having just his second start after a fifth on debut at Maryborough, got off the fence early to sit outside race favourite Spidergrace.
The pair controlled proceedings before swinging for home the final time locked together.
Despite the urgings of Laura Crossland, Spidergrace just couldn’t shake off Imamenace, who levelled up and then edged ahead near the line after a cracking two-horse battle to pull off an upset victory.
“Amazing,” said winning driver Greg Sugars.
“I drove him in the heat and Peter said he goes all right. He went well first up, hitting the line hard.
“But to come out and do what he did tonight, there’s no way in the world I would have thought he could do that.”
Asdenro produced a big run to finish third after being inconvenienced early in the race.
The winner’s mile rate was 2:03.9.
