Quality harness racing mare Cullens Angel achieved her major goal this preparation when she led all the way to win the $30,000 Patrick Granny Smith mare's feature at Devonport paceway on Sunday night.
The Phillip Ford-trained four-year-old went into the race with two recent wins to her credit and with an inside front row draw (1) she only had to step cleanly and hold the lead to register the hat trick of wins.
That's how it panned out, although she was made to work hard to retain the lead when Totally Perfect attacked early but gave up and took the trail.
Talented young driver Nathan Ford rated the mare superbly, nursing her through the third quarter before releasing the brakes leaving the back straight the last time.
Once released, the mare forged clear and went on to score convincingly from Totally Perfect with Pearls From Heaven charging home for third just in advance of Southern Playmate.
"This mare's main mission was the Granny Smith so we've achieved that goal," trainer Ford said.
"She didn't have very good form here at Devonport but that was when she had a few issues and to be honest it was never in the equation tonight."
"She's done a good job and now we'll sit back and assess where we go from here," he s said.
