Overlooked in the wagering at odds of 5-1, Saratoga Gaming and Raceway track-record holder Prime Interest sprung a mild upset on Friday when scoring by three lengths in the featured $15,000 Open Trot, covering the mile in 1:55.3.
Driven from post four by Frank Coppola Jr., Prime Interest settled briefly in fourth place before beginning a first-over charge to the front as Eric's Image (Kim Crawford), and then Clearaway (John Stark Jr.), took the field through early splits of :27.4 and :57.2.
As the trotters negotiated their third turn of the mile, Prime Interest powered his way to the front, reaching the three-quarter marker in1:26.2 before sprinting home unchallenged in :29.1 to secure victory.
Prime Interest returned $13.80, $4.50, and $2.60 for the win. Pablo Angus (Dan Cappello Jr.) brought in $2.70 and $2.10 for second, while Eric's Image paid $3.10 for third.
Owned by Vincent Laurenzo and trained by Colin Johnson, Prime Interest has visited the winner's circle 11 times in 27 starts this year, and boasts a seasonal bankroll of $106,240 with lifetime earnings in excess of $186,000.
