he New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club today (Wednesday August 3) announced that the Public Stand at harness vracing headquarters - Addington Raceway- is to be demolished providing a cleared site in time for Cup and Show Week. The Stand, which is located furthest away from the winning post at Addington suffered major structural damage in the February and subsequent earthquakes and has been red stickered and off limits ever since.

"There is simply far too much structural damage to justify the many millions of dollars that would be required to be spent in attempting to repair the 50 year old building" said Addington Raceway CEO Shane Gloury.

Southern Demolition and Salvage Ltd, a Christchurch based company has been contracted for the demolition work which will commence within the next seven days and will be completed by mid October enabling the existing site to be utilised to accommodate patrons on Christchurch Casino New Zealand Trotting Cup Day on Tuesday 8 November.

While Addington will be without its Public Stand on Cup Day this year, the Club is still expecting a huge crowd to be in attendance for what is the biggest annual harness meeting in the Southern Hemisphere.

"Our two other Stands, the Metropolitan Stand and the Twiggers Stand suffered no structural damage in the Earthquake and are fully operational. We will be bringing in a range of temporary infrastructure including marquees, temporary grandstands, bars, food outlets, tote facilities, toilets and big screens to ensure that our regular big Cup Day crowd is well accommodated and catered for on the day," said Gloury.

"The Club is working closely with hire companies and has engaged Fabel Events to assist in ensuring the temporary facilities are of sufficient quality for a major event like Cup Day. We are well advanced with some exciting plans and I am certain that many patrons will find the facilities and layout of the venue this year to be more appealing than the traditional Public Stand for what is the biggest sporting and social event in Canterbury," said Gloury.

Tickets and Dining Packages for Christchurch Casino New Zealand Trotting Cup Day at Addington are now on sale and can be purchased online at or via Ticketek.
